2022.01.25 17:07 yellowtonkatruck I thought an interest rate increase tomorrow was a sure thing, but from what I’m reading it’s not?

Isn’t that our only proven tool to fight inflation, which is at record highs? I see more and more about how the fed might hold rates, and we might follow suit. Don’t we NEED to raise rates at this point, as soon as possible?
What does everyone think?

2022.01.25 17:07 slkp1 Merging two tables

Hi,
I’m trying to merge two tables. Of which I need to aggregate data on the table I’m merging. I know how to do this but am running into 1 issue.
There is one column in which I don’t need the data aggregated, I need the data as is, as this is an indentifier column that will be used to filter (identifies the lease type - operating or finance). The other columns I’m trying to merge are what needs to be aggregated.
How can set this up so I don’t lose the data needed in the indentifier column of the merged table. I hope this makes sense.
Any help greatly appreciated.

2022.01.25 17:07 just_a_tiger_ I hate this scene with all of my soul. I have nothing against the MCU, in fact I have been a huge Marvel/DC fanboy in the last years, yet I still find unbelievable how they could have gotten away with this scene, in what is presumably a kids' movie. I am ok with some adult/dark jokes, but not this.

2022.01.25 17:07 Prikkasaurus_Rex A small sermon on successfully writing and playing Lone Wolf characters within a party.

I've talked about my successful lone wolf character before. The keys to having a successful lone wolf character are:
A likeable personality. While distant and probably dickish, they need to be witty and snappy in their interactions. So the interactions are fewer, perhaps, but higher in quality and make good memories.
Operate within a party. While a lone wolf, you need to also get across the idea that your character KNOWS they need a party. The character needs to know they need a party, but also be in denial of that truth. Think like "I hate the fact that I have to rely on others." Not that they hate the party, perhaps more that they hate themselves or their situation due to their perceived weakness of having to rely on others.
And finally, progression. This can go in two ways; a negative or positive character arc. Either your lone wolf character evolves into a more negative version of themselves, such as becoming more dickish and distant and this coming back to bite them. Discuss this with your DM and make them have a definite final point where their negative transformation comes to a conclusion, either their departure from the party, or death, etc etc. Or the positive character arc, redemption and progression into a better person. This is the one I prefer, though negative arcs can be fun but much harder to nail down effectively. Your character may come to realize that they have come to enjoy the people they're around. Or they become less selfish and come to care for others. Or they come to accept how they cannot truly face everything alone, and come to appreciate the people that helped them along the way.
Let me give you an example of my successful lone wolf character: Cline Vallen. (I will be adding small notes in parentheses so as to mark the importance of certain events in relation to his personality.)
Cline grew within the slums near the wharfs in a port city. His father was a deadbeat whom he never met. (He already feels abandoned from a young age.) His mother gave birth to Cline's younger sister, and a few years later passed away due to sickness. This left Cline alone, to somehow provide for his sister. (He is thrust into responsibility, furthering his feeling of abandonment and also being forced into absolute independence)
He turned to a life of crime from a very young age, starting by simply stealing food and other necessities to survive on the streets and provide for his sister. He clung to his sister as his only thing within this world with meaning. As he grew, he forbid her from braving the dangers of the wharfs. She lived in isolation within their small shack whilst Cline did his absolute best to provide for her. (Out of an overbearing desire to protect her, he also inflicts negativity on her life by secluding her from experiencing the world. His desire to protect her is also costing her freedom. Unbeknownst to him, out of his love, comes pain.)
He begins making a name for himself in the criminal underworld. And by his 20th birthday, he is presented with an opportunity to fulfill a contract for a family of nobles. This family had been challenged to an arena match by their rival clan, and had lost. The rivals, the Torren family, had then gone on to present their young champion with a ceremonial set of armor as congratulations for the victory. This was an insult the unnamed clan could not bare. So they contract Cline to break into the Torren Manor and steal the set of armor, so that it may be melted down and desecrated as revenge.
Its a suicide mission, one highly unlikely to escape from alive. But if Cline could pull it off, it would mean money and private employment by a clan with vast resources and a major boost to his reputation.
Despite the odds, he naively accepted. His dreams of securing some form of stability for himself and his sister drove him forward. (His naivety and ignorance getting the better of him.)
He successfully snuck into the manor and into the Torren Champions quarters. Their champion was one of their sons, a young heir to the fortune of the clan. As Cline was removing the armor from the mounts above the fireplace, the young Gael Torren entered the room, shocked to see a thief within his quarters. As Gael shouted in alarm, Cline instinctively rushed him and thrust a dagger into his throat. The young champion squirmed on the ground as he slowly died. (Further trauma, forcing Cline into more psychological seclusion.)
Cline was never a killer, he was a thief. He paused for a moment in terror at what he had just done. But his instincts took hold as he loaded the armor into a burlap sack, smashed the window with the helmet, and jumped to the courtyard below. And he ran.
The unnamed clan had already caught wind of the murder, and refused to pay Cline and shunned him. Cline knew he would never get work here again.
He arrived home much later that night, to find his sister gone and the shack ransacked. There was a letter from the head of the Torren clan, which threatened to kill Cline's sister should he not turn himself in. Cline knew if he turned himself in, he would be executed. And even that wouldn't guarantee his sister's release. So he opted instead to venture out, alone, to attempt to find her and rescue her with the information of his underground contacts. (Motivation for his journey: to find his sister and escape.)
He ultimately came to fall in line with a party, whom he didn't consider a party as they were simply aboard the same carriage traveling to a small town, when they were ambushed by goblins and Cline was surrounded and nearly killed. But a party member who happened to be a paladin had healed him and saved his life. He knew at that point that it was ignorant and naive to think he could do this alone. He would need this party, as much as he hated that thought. (The beginning of growth in Session 1, the seed of teamwork.)
I won't go through his whole story over the length of that campaign, but this hopefully gives you some insight into how a lonewolf character can be written in a compelling way, and work with a party regardless of their wants.
A very important part of writing characters (in both D&D and in novels/movies etc) is the concept of "perception versus reality", or "the character flaw." Compelling characters usually have a perception of reality that is directly opposed to true reality. This gives them an obstacle that they need to overcome. It gives a character depth, and a flaw that directly opposes something that we KNOW will come up. Too many D&D characters are written with specific flaws, such as "my character loves dragons, to a fanatic point." Or something akin to that. Very specific things.
I think a major problem is that many people who play D&D are either not willing, or do not have the creative knowledge needed to write a properly deep character. You don't want to write a "2d character" as it is often called, what is technically a "flat character arc". These characters face no development, do not change over the events of a story, and ultimately end up in the same ending as they were in the beginning.
Whilst flat characters can have interesting habits and personalities, they don't ever change or go anywhere. They lack dynamic interactions with the world, unless they are "active characters". This means they actively change the world around them.
Good examples of this are characters such as Goku in Dragon Ball. He never changes his true character, through all of his experiences he remains the same person. But he actively changes the people he meets (i.e. Vegeta, as well as many others.)
Great negative character arcs can be shown by looking at Darth Vader from Star Wars. He slowly becomes a worse character due to his ambitions, before becoming Vader. Vader believes his former self is dead, anakin is no more. He is not anakin, he is Vader. This is the lie he believes, or his Perception of reality that is then faced with the truth of reality; his children are alive. He is Anakin. He is their father, and his past is still echoing throughout the galaxy. They are a descendent of anakin, of himself. This is how his character runs against the grain of reality. This is one of his greatest flaws.
Great positive character arcs can be shown in, again DragonBall, Vegeta. Former warrior, mass murderer, human and earth hater, turned family man, earth defender, and one of the saviors of the universe. A man who learned how to love, how to forgive, and gave up selfishness to sacrifice himself to save others.
This has been long, don't know if anyone will read all of this, lol, but hopefully it helps players and DMs write some really compelling characters and spice up their games! With that, I'm gonna end this post. Hopefully you guys find something useful in this advice!

2022.01.25 17:07 trchttrhydrn Realization about the depth a Plum Village practice

In Plum Village, they have a type of meditation called "The Blooming of A Lotus" (you can access it under "guided meditations" in the plum village app). The first meditation exercise consists of two parts,
Breathing in, I calm my body Breathing out, I smile
and
Breathing in, I dwell in the present moment Breathing out, I know it is a wonderful moment
Now, I realized today while practicing that these are actually activating some of the 7 factors of awakening. I will explain:
Breathing in, you naturally get a sense of energy, and this is coupled with the intention to calm (tranquility). Breathing out, you naturally get a sense of tranquility, and this is coupled with a smile (joy).
Breathing in, dwelling in the present moment, you exercise mindfulness and experience concentration, and knowing it as a wonderful moment, you experience joy, tranquility, and equanimity.
So, far from being some special invented practice of a particular school, this practice goes to the heart of what the buddha outlined as factors for awakening in the earliest texts.
Metta to you who have read this far :)
